As the road from Gallon Jug to Chan Chich nears the lodge, huge palm trees become dominant, the canopy becomes dense and relatively little light reaches the forest floor. Not far ahead of our location here, the road passes between two mounds (which were once Mayan temples or perhaps residences of the elite) and into the clearing which is now Chan Chich Lodge. About three miles back toward Gallon Jug, we sighted a Jaguar crossing the road at midday.
