| Ambergris Caye - a short hop by commuter plane from the mainland - is a narrow 25-mile-long strip of limestone that derives its name from the ambergris extracted from the whales once hunted here. Its seaward side is protected by a barrier reef second in length only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. In this photo, San Pedro Town, the center of activity on the caye and home to about 1200 permanent residents, can be seen, and in the foreground, the reef on which people come from all over the world to fish, snorkel and dive. |
