Canoeing the Macal River - by David J. L'Hoste

We put into the Macal River about 10 miles from San Ignacio, and paddled down past six-foot Green Iguanas resting on overhanging limbs and Grey-necked Wood-rails foraging on the shady riverbank. A Gray Hawk, perched twenty feet above the water, watched us drift by. Amazon and Green Kingfishers noisily announced our approach to River Otters which quickly dove in response. Our driver, Rennie, met us in San Ignacio where we had a late lunch at Eva's before heading to the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich.
